History of Brazil

Indigenous Ameriindians settled in Brazil around 9000 BCE.

Then Brazil was officially “discovered” in 1500 by Portuguese diplomat Pedro Álvares Cabral. Portugal established its first colony in Brazil in 1530. This was followed by a rapid decline of the local population and then the introduction of African Slaves to work on the sugar plantations and gold mining.

In 1789, Brazilians tried to kick out their Portuguese rulers. The rebellion was soon put down, but it started a movement toward independence.

By 1822, the son of the Portugues King declared himself as a ruler of the Independent Empire of Brazil. Brazil became a sovereign nation. Kings of Portuguese blood ruled until 1888 when military leaders and landowners expelled the king, and Brazil became a federal republic.

The military dominated Brazil until 1985, either through direct rule of through heavy influence on the leader. Since then Brazil has become a democracy and the economy is growing rapidly.
